An outstanding example of a Porsche 356 Pre-A
This June '54 bent screen had been asleep in Texas storage since 1978, the license remains on the windscreen. Amazingly, it appears that this 356 had all original body panels and had never been previously restored or crashed.
When we restored it our aim was for a perfectly functioning 356 suitable for a Grand Tour or Mille Miglia style event.
It's a delight to drive, and unlike modern sportscars which beg to be consumed fast, this begs to be sipped not gulped. You are behind the wheel of an art form, relaxed, proud and totally involved.
The quality of the body, the shut lines and the panel fit are notably good enhancing its original shade of Turkish red paint.
The refurbished interior was inspired by, and carefully matched to, the original items found in the unrestored car. Pale beige leather replaces the leatherette and the seat inserts are in corduroy, as per the factory specification. The radio panel in the dash retains its original material.
Born as a 1,300 cc, built by Reutter and delivered to the US for June 1964.
Body panels match and believed original along with the transmission.
The 1300 engine was removed many years ago, and has been replaced with a sweet 1,600 cc unit, resulting in rather better driving dynamics more suited to taking a Grand Tour today. All running gear has been checked, serviced, refurbished and/or renewed.
Restoring one to this standard for this outlay would be very hard today.
